Taos Hemp began in 1998 when a lovely guitar strap, handwoven in 100% hemp, came to this hemptress’ attention. We local Taoseno musicians were performing concerts in our local Kit Carson Park on a regular weekend basis. A young man had seen me playing guitar and offered to sell me this hemp strap. The sale lead me to learn more about industrial hemp.
In 1999, upon returning to the US from a hemp research trip to Thailand, Nepal, Tibet, and India for a six month period, it was clear that I had to initiate a hemp company. Bodhgaya, India and its tailors gave Taos Hemp the prototype bag to redesign into a 100% hemp bag.
Hemp Hemp Hooray as we green people say. Ruth had found the niche in which to put her Buddhist philosophy, her hands, and her heart. All the Truth seemed to resonate in the four letter word: Hemp. Buddhism is based upon the three Jewels: Buddha, Dharma, Sangha. The word Dharma is a Sanskrit word meaning Truth, the Way, that which supports and upholds. Hemp is the Truth, Hemp can set us free. Industrial hemp is the strongest fiber on the planet and the travel bags would be called Dharma Bags.
Taos Hemp began on the West Rim Mesa of Taos in an off-grid, solar home that was built by myself and a few good men. What a perfect setting for a hemp business. My mother’s 1950 Singer sewing machine was the tool for putting together the pieces of the bag. All the dyeing was done in a Speed Queen wringer washer donated by a lovely woman who heard my plea for a dye vat.
The Dharma Bags are now manufactured by Ecolution, an organic hemp company located in Transylvania, Romania.
Vision Quest:
To walk the talk, to speak the Truth about Hemp. To legalize the usage of Hemp for Food, Clothing, Medicine, Shelter, and Fuel. In short, to use the "miracle seed" the wonder potion, to heal the Planet.
Taos Hemp is on a "mission from God." It is another finger getting into the delicious pie of Hemp (hempseed, hemp flour, hemp butter) which contains the highest protein next to Soy of any seed plant. When a plant can give us all of our basic needs to live and also a medicinal cure for diseases such as cancer, AIDS, arthritis, glaucoma, and heart disease, then it is well worth having.
Viewpoint:
The Hemp issue sits on "the razor's edge." It gives the innuendo of marijuana, a drug, a high, and an agricultural crop our government highly endorsed in the 30's and World War II for rope. Hemp is known and recorded since 4000 BC. Hemp was integral to ancient cultures of China, Persia, and Rome.
The true definition of Hemp is any plant that possesses a minimum of .13 % thc (tetra-hydro-canabinol) which includes the nightshade family: our potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers along with Cannabis sativa (hemp's Latin name).
We live in a world that suffers from abuse, toxicity, and depravation of all kinds. Hemp addresses the basic needs of the planet which are: food, clothing, shelter, fuel, and medicine. "We've got the cure but we ain't gonna give it." -- Ras Makahna
Sovereign nations of the United States have the clearest means available to change the wrong view of Hemp. Sovereignty is not variable to a culture. It exists in and of itself as freedom of choice and therefore sound action towards the good of all. For after all, it is the civil right of the life forms: human and all living matter, to enjoy "no harm."
